I just turned on RTE to watch Bernard Dunne defend his European title. I was late joining the coverage, but I was just in time to see the referee stopping the fight after 1 minute and 26 seconds of the first round. Dunne lost the fight on a technical knockout. What really struck me was that even in defeat, and being obviously shaken by his defeat, he seemed to be more concerned that he had left down his fans.
In an age when money seems to be the be all and end all, it’s great to see that one athlete is thinking more about the disappointment of his fans than the setback in his own career. Fair play to Bernard Dunne.
